Child Safety Zone Ordinance

The City of Burlington Common Council passed a Child Safety Zone and Residential Restriction Ordinance applicable to Sex Offenders on June 21, 2011, which officially goes into effect upon publication on June 30, 2011.

This ordinance serves the City’s compelling interest to promote, protect, and improve the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the City by creating Child Safety Zones as areas where children regularly congregate.  This ordinance restricts Sex Offender’s from residing in (unless “grandfathered” in), from entering in, or from loitering in the Child Safety Zones and loiter free areas surrounding the safety zones. This is a regulatory measure aimed at protecting the health and safety of children in the City of Burlington from the risk that Sex Offenders may re-offend where children congregate.
