We Energies have
scheduled a multi-phased gas main
replacement project in certain areas in
the City for the 2007 construction
season. This work is being performed in
order to upgrade some aging facilities.
The old existing steel mains will be
replaced with new 2" PE-Polyethylene
(plastic) mains, providing a more
efficient and safer distribution of
natural gas. |
There are three project areas; they are:
-
Dardis Drive Area: On Dardis Dr. from
Rose Ann Dr. to Hillside Dr.; Rose Ann Dr. from
Dardis Dr. to S. Elmwood Ave.; Lincoln St. from
Dardis Dr. to S. Elmwood Ave.; and Hillside Dr.
from just East of Donald Dr. to Dardis Dr.
-
Garfield Street Area: On Garfield St.
from Sunset Dr/Sheldon St. to McHenry St.;
Northrop St. from Garfield St. to Beloit St.;
Dutton St. from Garfield St. to just North of W.
Market St.; and Beloit St. from Sheldon St. to
Northrop St.
-
N. Kendrick Avenue Area:
On N. Kendrick Ave. from Walnut St. to Tower
St.; Oak St. from N. Kendrick Ave. to Smith St.;
Park Ave. from N. Kendrick Ave. to Smith St.;
Westridge Ave. from N. Kendrick Ave.; and some
additional main replacement may be done on a
portion of Walnut St., from N. Kendrick Ave. to
Maple Ave.
We Energies will be boring and excavating in the
parkways, or grass areas, for much of the project.
Where street crossings are needed, asphalt pavement
will be restored, and the street should only be
closed for about a day. In areas where curb,
sidewalks or driveways are disturbed, they will be
replaced. Property owners in the project area can
also expect to have their gas service lines either
reconnected or replaced. All areas disturbed will be
restored in kind by the We Energies contractor.
Every effort will be made to try to protect parkway
trees from damage. We Energies will be contacting
each property owner affected by this project, and
will provide more detailed information at that time.
They will also have a field representative on site,
during construction, for any questions or concerns
that arise.

2007 STREET AND SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM |
By: Judy Gerulat, Engineering Technician

T2007 street and sidewalk
improvement program is well underway. Wanasek
Corporation is the general contractor for the
project. The following projects are part of this
year's program, which are slated to be completed by
September 1, 2007.
Lewis St. – The street
resurfacing work on Lewis St. includes replacement
of sanitary sewer mains (circa 1908), sanitary sewer
lateral relay (only that part lying under the
roadway), replacement of lead water services (from
the main to the shut off box), storm sewer repairs,
pulverizing existing pavement, regrading and placing
new asphalt pavement. Curb and gutter will be
replaced, where necessary, and handicap ramps will
be added, where needed.
Work on Lewis St. for the month of
July includes continuing the sanitary sewer main
replacement, sanitary sewer lateral reconnects, lead
water service replacements, water valve and hydrant
repairs. Portions of Lewis Street will be closed (1
to 2 blocks at a time) as trenches are open and work
is progressing.
Randolph St. – The
street resurfacing work on Randolph St. includes
watermain replacement, from (W. State St. to Duane
St.), replacement of lead water services (from the
main to the shut off box), sanitary sewer main relay
(W. Chandler Blvd. to Duane St.), sanitary sewer
lateral relay on the section of main to be replaced
(only that part lying under the roadway),
pulverizing existing pavement, regrading and placing
new asphalt pavement. Curb and gutter will be
replaced, where necessary, and handicap ramps will
be added, where needed. Access will be limited to
residents/property owners directly adjacent to the
project, and may be modified from time to time,
depending on locations of open trenches. Currently,
the Randolph St. project is slated to begin in
August.
Crest St. – The street
resurfacing work on Crest St. includes pulverizing
existing pavement, regrading and placing new asphalt
pavement. Curb and gutter will be replaced, where
necessary. Crest St. is planned to begin after the
Randolph St. project.
E. Market St. –
Concrete slab and joint repairs are planned at
various locations on E. Market St., between S. Kane
St. and S. Pine St. This also should begin in July.
This work will be done under traffic, however,
traffic lane switchovers will be necessary, as the
project dictates.
Sidewalk Improvement Program
– Existing sidewalks on Crest St., Lewis St. and
Randolph St., where necessary, will be removed and
replaced. The sidewalk work will be assessed to the
property owners, as previously notified.
Lewis St. Retaining Wall
– Repairs to the Lewis St. retaining wall, adjacent
to the old water tower, are also planned to begin in
July. The repairs consist of various concrete
surface repairs, epoxy crack injection and
application of a protective surface treatment.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL WORK IS WEATHER
PENDING.
