The Burlington Water
Utility will be flushing hydrants on
THURSDAYS during the months of April
through August, to reduce and remove the
accumulation of rust and iron in the
city's water main distribution system.
The flushing may cause discolored water
in your system. This discolored water is
bacteriologically safe and will not harm
you. |
City residents should check their
water supply on Thursdays before engaging in any
work that could be affected by the city's flushing
of hydrants. Your cooperation and understanding
during water main flushing is greatly appreciated.

KEEPING DOGS AND CATS IN THE CITY |
By: Lieutenant Scot Eisenhauer, Police Department
There are numerous ordinances that regulate care and
safekeeping of animals in the City of Burlington.
These ordinances not only protect animals but also
make our community a more enjoyable place to live.
No person shall keep more than 5 dogs or cats within
the City with exception that a litter of pups or
kittens may be kept for no more than 5 months.
Every owner of a dog more than five months of age on
January 1 of any year, or 5 months of age within the
license year, shall annually, or within 30 days from
the date such dog becomes 5 months of age, obtain a
license from the City Hall therefore as provided by
§174.05 and 174.07, Wis. Stats. The license year
shall commence on January 1 and end on the following
December 31.
In areas were kennels are permitted as defined in
Wisconsin State Statue 174.06, no kennel shall be
located closer than 100 feet to the boundary of the
nearest adjacent property. No person shall knowingly
keep or harbor any dog that habitually barks, howls
or yelps, or any cat that habitually cries or howls
to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood.
Such dogs and cats are considered public nuisances.
Dogs and cats are prohibited from running at large.
This is defined as the presence of a cat or dog at
any place except upon the premises of the owner. A
dog or cat that is leashed and under control of a
person, who is physically able to handle it shall
not be considered running at large.
The animal may not break, bruise, tear up, crush or
injure any lawn, flowerbed, plant, shrub tree or
garden, or defecate thereon.
Dog or cat owners must on any public or private
property not owned by such person, have a device to
scoop up any excrement and have an appropriate
depository to put such in. This will not apply to
visually or physically handicapped persons.

TORNADO SEASON IS APPROACHING |
By: Debra Rintamaki, Administrative Assistant - DPW
 |
Knowing that
Wisconsin is prone to tornadoes is the
first step in becoming prepared for one.
As severe weather approaches, a TORNADO
WATCH may be issued. This indicates that
atmospheric conditions are favorable for
severe thunderstorms to produce
tornadoes. Listen for updated forecasts
and possible warnings. A TORNADO WARNING
is issued when a tornado has been
spotted on the ground or is indicated by
radar. Take cover immediately. |
Tornado Awareness Week will be
April 9th - 14th in Wisconsin. The statewide tornado
drill is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, 2007. A
mock watch will be issued at 1:00 p.m. and the mock
warning will be issued approximately 1:20 p.m. in
Southeast Wisconsin.
In the City of Burlington, there are 3 outdoor
warning sirens that would sound in the event of a
tornado warning is issued. These sirens are tested
weekly on Saturdays at noon. If activated during
severe weather, seek shelter immediately. Remember
that, even with the latest forecasting technology,
tornadoes can occur with little or no warning.
