CITY AUCTION

By: Scot Eisenhauer, Police Lieutenant

Biannual City Auction

Saturday, April 21, 2007

9 A.M Viewing – 10 A.M. Auction

At the Police Department Garage

The City of Burlington will be holding it's once every two years auction on Saturday, April 21, 2007. Viewing of items will be 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and the auction from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. This will take place outside the garages in the west alley of the Police Department (located at 224 E. Jefferson Street). By ordinance, the City is allowed to sell its surplus property at auction. In addition, unclaimed property that the Police Department collects is auctioned off. This year's auction will include computer equipment, cameras, tools, golf clubs, a baby stroller, a canoe, a boat, decking materials and of course, dozens and dozens of BICYCLES!

The Police Department has many items that are either located by officers as lost property or turned in by citizens as found property. The police department makes every effort to see these items are returned to the owner. Items with a value of one hundred dollars or less are posted with fliers in the Police Department and City Hall. Items with a value over one hundred dollars are posted in the local newspapers.

The city encourages all citizens to register their bicycles. Every bicycle to be auctioned in April did not have a city registration. Even if the license tag is removed the serial number of the bicycle will identify the owner to police and the bike can be returned. You can register your bike at the City of Burlington Police Department It takes about three minutes and is free! So drop by the Police Department on the 21st of April. Who knows, you might find a great deal!

SEWER BACKUP PROBLEMS

By: Connie Wilson, Utility Manager

In 2006, the City of Burlington Wastewater Treatment Collection System Crew responded to 16 calls for sewer backup problems. Of these calls, only one was due to blockage in the City's main collection system. More often than not, the cause of a sewer backup is in the lateral and from items that are not intended for the sanitary system, such as toys, diapers, underwear, paper products (other than toilet paper), keys, and false teeth. To avoid flushing such items, remember to close the toilet lid after use. Also be aware that roots from trees or other vegetation close to the lateral

can plug it. The sewer lateral, from the house to the main collection system line, is the property owner's responsibility. If you suspect that your lateral is plugged, call the WWTP at 262-539-3646 BEFORE you call a plumber. We will check the sewer line in the street and inform you of our findings. If the problem is not in the main collection line, you may then wish to contact a plumber.

PREVENTING WATER SERVICE LINE FREEZE-UPS

By: Connie Wilson, Utility Manager

During the recent sub-zero cold weather, we received several calls about frozen water service lines, which also cause water meters to freeze. The water meter is the property owner's responsibility and if frozen and nonfunctional, the Water Utility will bill the customer for the cost of the water meter replacement.

Your water service line may be subject to freezing due to unprotected interior water piping running along exterior walls, especially by windows and in unheated areas such as basements. Methods of preventing water pipe freeze-ups included closing any exterior fresh air vents, caulking cracks, insulating pipes or installing electrical heat tape where needed. Other measures include opening cabinet doors that hide plumbing, keeping the thermostat at 55 degrees or above or keep a trickle of water running continuously with a faucet stream about the size of a lead pencil. Begin running water when the outside temperature gets down to zero and remains there for any length of time. Keep this water running until the temperature is above freezing for several days. The frost line must come up before it is safe. By observing these safeguards, you may prevent the inconvenience and costly expense of a frozen water line.
