Join the Burlington
Public Library Adult Book Club on Sep.
25th at 7:00 pm for a discussion of A
GOOD SCENT FROM A STRANGE MOUNTAIN by
Robert Olen Butler. This 1993 Pulitzer
Fiction winner is a collection of
lyrical and poignant stories about the
aftermath of the Vietnam War and its
enduring impact on the Vietnamese.
Butler's powerful stories, placed in New
Orleans, blend Vietnamese folklore and
contemporary American realities. Our
discussion will look at the perspective
of being an immigrant from this country
and how we appear. |

The City of Burlington has an Adult
School Crossing Guard Program. We have
adult guards at five busy locations
before and after school. These Crossing
Guards will begin the school year on
September 1st, 2006. We have an
experienced staff of five regular guards
and two substitutes. The Police
Department is proud of the dedication
that our guards have shown. Most of the
guards have served the community in this
way for several years. |
Whether the students are on foot, at a bus stop, or
being dropped off near school, their safety as
pedestrians is supported by adult school crossing
guards who are on duty each school day. These
crossing guards help our students cross busy streets
and reinforce safe-crossing behavior and
traffic-hazard identification which helps reduce
young pedestrian deaths and injuries.
Our crossing guards are given authority by WI State
Statute 346.46(2m) which reads, in part: "Every
operator of a motor vehicle approaching a school
crossing which is controlled by an adult school
crossing guard…shall follow directions of the school
crossing guard. If directed by the school crossing
guard to stop, the operator shall stop…and shall
remain stopped until the school crossing guard
directs then operator to proceed" (emphasis added).
Crossing guards report vehicles that fail to stop or
drive recklessly. Officers are immediately assigned
to follow up on these reports and citations are
issued when appropriate.
Help us to welcome back our 2006-2007 Crossing
Guards:

When you see a street light out or
malfunctioning please report it to the
City of Burlington Department of Public
Works at 262-763-2060. If it is a
city-owned street light we will schedule
the necessary repair. If it is a WE
Energies pole, we will visit the site to
get the pole number and report it to
them to schedule the repair. If you can
give us the street address closest to
the pole in question when you call, it
will help to expedite the repair order.
In addition, if you see any lights that
have been damaged or vandalized, please
call the DPW office with a description
of the damage and the location. |

With summer drawing to a close and
school due back in session, Wisconsin's fifth
season, "Construction Season", looks like it will
hang around for a while longer. The City's 2006
Street and Sidewalk Improvement Program is due for
substantial completion by September 1st. This work
includes improvements on Lincoln Street, Robert
Street, State Street, the McHenry and Market Street
Intersection, Dunford Drive, and the City's sidewalk
repair work. Final pavement on all jobs, except
State Street, is expected on August 30 and 31st, and
September 1st. State Street is expected to have
binder course asphalt in place from McHenry to
Johnson Street, and possibly as far as Kane Street.
Concrete crews were on site last week to begin the
curb and sidewalk work associated with this project.
The rest of the City's repair work on sidewalks has
been completed.
The Commerce Street project is expected to run far
into the fall season. This project includes the
relaying of sanitary sewer, water main, and storm
sewer, and the replacement of curb and sidewalk.
Traffic signals will be added at the Milwaukee and
Pine intersection in anticipation of the change over
to two-way traffic. To make the change possible, the
island at Adam Street and Pine Street will be
narrowed. The radius at Main Street and East State
Street will be broadened, to allow the right turn
onto Highway 142 much easier. The island at Pine and
Chestnut will be removed, and the spur connection
from Commerce to West Chestnut will be constructed.
Many changes to pavement markings and signage will
need to be made just prior to the changeover. This
project began on July 17th, and is a 70 day
contract, which pushes the completion to late
October or early November, depending on weather or
unforeseen circumstances. Thus far, sanitary sewer
is complete, water main is progressing quite
quickly, and pavement removals are underway.
Electricians are placing conduit for traffic signals
and pedestrian lighting.
Two-way traffic is expected to go into effect upon
the substantial completion of Commerce Street.
Please watch for further updates as the time draws
closer. Information meetings are planned sometime in
September so residents can review the final plans
for the two-way conversion.
