LIBRARY MAY NEWS

Adult Book Discussion Group

The Burlington Public Library Adult Book Discussion Group will discuss A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith on Monday, May 22 at 7:00pm. Picked as one of the best books of the century by the New York Public Library, this coming-of-age book has delighted readers for over 60 years. Its richly-plotted narrative of three generations in a poor but proud American family offers a detailed and unsentimental portrait of urban life at the beginning of the century. Perhaps you read this book in your youth. Read it again and share with us your memories.

WE ENERGIES OVERHEAD ELECTRIC PROJECT

WE Energies is planning an upgrade to their overhead electric system. The project is known as the Sheldon Relief project. It includes replacement of overhead electric distribution and service lines, and replacement of numerous power poles. General locations of the project area include: Washington St. (Johnson to N. Kane St.), Jefferson St. (McHenry to Pine St.), State St. (Conkey to S. Pine St.), Gardner Ave. (Hawthorn to Emerson St.), W. Chandler Blvd., Duane St., Schemmer St., Randolph St., Perkins Blvd. (Jefferson St. to Chandler Blvd.), N. Kane St., Hawthorn St., and the alley behind the Chestnut St. loop area. The project is expected to begin July, 2006 and be completed in July, 2007.

In order for WE Energies to make this upgrade and provide better electric service to their customers, it will be necessary to trim various trees along the project route. WE Energies will be mailing out informational letters to those property owners that are directly affected. Please contact WE Energies with specific project questions.

FARMERS MARKET

The Farmers Market will be available again this year at the Veteran's Memorial Building parking lot on Saturdays from May 6th through November 25th. Hours for the Farmers Market are set for 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. There will be no Farmers Market on May 27th (Memorial Day Weekend) due to Chocolate Fest activities.

It is our hope that many vendors will take advantage of the opportunity to sell their homegrown goods and products. Crafters are also encouraged to display their talents. If you are interested in being a vendor, please contact Bev Gill at City Hall at 262-342-1161 to obtain permit information.

Please be sure to visit the Farmers Market on Saturdays to support our local producers!

Schreiber/Anderson Associates, the landscape and design planners for Burlington's Riverwalk, have recently been awarded an Honor Award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. With the help of Schreiber/Anderson Associates and the many dedicated elected officials, Community Development Authority members and the private businesses located along the Riverwalk (shown above), Burlington's downtown revitalization plan has taken notice state-wide.

HAPPY RETIREMENT TO TOM!!!

Employee Tom Bird (above) is retiring after 33 years of service with the City of Burlington. Tom started with the City in 1973 and has done everything from garbage pick-up, snow plowing, and patching potholes, to cleaning sewers, hauling sludge, and rescuing ducklings from catch basins.

We all wish Tom Bird a long, well-deserved retirement. He will be missed.

MEMORIAL DAY GARBAGE PICK-UP

Due to Memorial Day our garbage and recycling pickup will be one day late for each of the normal pickups occurring during the week immediately following the holiday. Everyone will be picked up by the close of business on the Saturday following this holiday.

SPRING CLEAN UP TIME!

by Deb Rintimaki, Administrative Assistant,
Department of Public Works - Streets and Parks

With spring here many City residents will be cleaning both their homes and their yards. To assist in this year's "spring cleaning" the City provides the following services to its residents:

GARBAGE/RECYCLABLES AND OLD FURNITURE/APPLIANCES PICKUP

While the city contracts with Onyx Services for our regular residential garbage and recycling disposal. Onyx will pick-up large items such as old furniture and appliances at no charge however, pick-up of all large items must be called in to Onyx at 1-800-232-0860 and have a pick up date arranged prior to the item being placed at the curb.

COMPOST SITE

The city does not provide pick-up service for landscape waste, but there is a compost site available to the city's taxpayers. The compost site on Maryland Avenue remains open year around and residents may dispose of brush and/or branches by bringing these items to the compost site. There are also containers for used oil and antifreeze at this site for the public to use.

BRUSH & LEAF PICK UP

As yards in the area are being cleaned this spring please keep in mind that brush pick-up is on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Residents must call and have their address placed on the brush pick-up list in order for their brush to be picked-up. Residents are also encouraged to bring their own brush to be disposed of to the compost site located on Maryland Avenue; this site is open daily for residents' convenience. Any residents that have leaves to be picked-up must take them to the Maryland Avenue compost site, as the City does not pick-up leaves in the spring or summer months. Any questions regarding brush and leaf pick up or the compost site can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 763-2060.
