SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION

As most of rush to get to work, be aware that school is back in session for both the public and parochial schools as of Thursday, September 1, 2005. Please be aware of your speed, be courteous to school bus drivers and watch out for children walking, and riding their bicycles to and from school.

NEW FACES AT THE BURLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

Over the past few months, the Police Department has hired several new officers and a new part-time dispatcher.

Officer Joseph Patla joined the PD in May. He is also a member of the Burlington Rescue squad. Joe has worked for several area police departments and is currently in Field Training. The nephew of retired police chief Ron Patla, and the son of retired Racine County Deputy Sheriff John Patla, Joe brings a family history of quality law enforcement to Burlington.

Ms. Danielle Baranek joined the PD in May as well. She is currently in the Police Academy at Waukesha County Technical College and graduates in August. Dani has spent the last eight years as a police dispatcher (most recently for Oak Creek).

Mr. Brian "Z" Zmudzinski will join the PD in August. Brian was recently honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. He served as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. He enters the Milwaukee Area Technical College Police Academy in August and expects to graduate in December.

Community Services Officer (CSO) Michelle Cannon is undergoing the rigorous training required to become a (part-time) Dispatcher. She is learning the process for answering the emergency and non-emergency phone lines; computer aided dispatching, report filing and front counter work. By late August, Michelle will be "solo" and able to perform these duties without the assistance of her Communications Training Officers.

We welcome these new members of the Police Department. They are very excited to be working to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in the City of Burlington. For more details about the newly hired members of the Police Department, please visit the Police News link.

LIBRARY ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION

Join the Burlington Public Library Adult Book Discussion Group on Monday, Sep. 26 at 7:00 p.m. as they are led in a discussion of THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by the Mark Twain of Burlington–Tom Gilding. Mr. Gilding will be leading our discussion and answering our questions with the real words of Mark Twain. Perhaps you read this classic in High School English class or maybe you've never read it. Now is your chance to dip into this book as summer winds down. Huck's journey down the river has become part of American mythology, and the issues of freedom and responsibility he confronts still concern American culture.

CITY OF BURLINGTON MANHOLE REPAIR PROGRAM

The City of Burlington DPW has enacted a defective manhole-reporting program in order to identify, examine and proactively maintain the manholes in the City. Oftentimes the manholes settle due to the infiltration of water and the effect of the freeze/thaw cycle; pipe defects or breaks, and frame failure. This program is to protect the structural integrity of the manholes and underlying infrastructure, and to improve the riding surface of the street, in an economical, effective and efficient manner.

If you notice a defective manhole in the street, it may be reported to the City of Burlington DPW office at 763-2060. Please identify the location of the manhole and describe the problem. After receipt of the initial report, a manhole survey shall be conducted by DPW staff and a determination shall be made as to the cause of the defect, and whether it is a safety issue or a regular maintenance issue. If it is a safety issue, protective measures shall immediately be taken to protect the public. Temporary measures shall be put in place until permanent repairs can be scheduled.

For regular maintenance repairs, the City's Five-Year Pavement Plan shall be reviewed. If the street that the defective manhole lies on is scheduled for resurfacing within the next two years, an interim repair shall be made, until the full repair can be completed with the street project. If the street is not planned to be resurfaced within the next two years, the necessary repair shall be incorporated into the following year's Street and Sidewalk Improvement Program.

SUMMER SEWER SAVINGS

The Sewer Irrigation Allowance for water usage during the summer quarter is now in effect. During this period, there is more outdoor water usage (watering lawns/landscape, washing vehicles, and filling pools), which does not flow through the sewer. Therefore, during this quarter only, the sewer charge is NOT calculated based on the amount of water volume metered. Instead, the sewer rate for the summer quarter is calculated based on the customer's First Quarter (December - March) usage or the Second Quarter (March - June) usage, whichever amount is lower.

The Sewer Irrigation Allowance is for single-family residential customers only and is for water usage during mid-June through mid-September. The customer receives this water/sewer bill in October 2005. Any questions relating to the Sewer Irrigation Allowance may be directed to the Burlington Water Utility at 342-1173.
