Drink with Confidence! The sources of drinking water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, springs and wells. In the City of Burlington, we use four deep wells that deliver safe, quality water to our citizens and business customers. To ensure that quality, City water is tested (both at the wells and throughout the distribution system) and treated with chlorine according to state and federal regulations. Each year the Burlington Water Utility issues a Drinking Water Quality Report, listing the levels of any substances detected, the sources of those substances, and any violations that may have occurred from them. In 2004 the City of Burlington had no violations that exceed the safe drinking water standards. A copy of this report is posted at the Library and at City Hall. It is also available by calling the Water Utility office at 342-1173. In order to continue to provide safe, reliable drinking water to the citizens of Burlington, the City is working on capital projects to increase well water capacity, to increase storage capacity, and to rehabilitate existing tanks. These projects will be completed in 2005-2006.
As officers head out on patrol they will have a new partner, one that will never leave the squad car. The Police Department is in the process of fitting all marked squad cars with new video equipment. Each car will host a Kustom Signal Eyewitness Digital Video Recorder. All information and activity will be recorded, categorized and stored in digital format for easy retrieval. This is a great partner for officers, as they know that the recorder is running to capture all details of a traffic stop. One of the most common uses for video recording is the "traffic stop". All stops are recorded as per department policy. This feature is useful for officers to critique their stops, report writing and for training. It is also used to help administration with citizen complaints. This system allows administrators to watch the officer's interaction with the public and compliance with department policy days or even months later. The recorders can be manually turned on or "triggered" in different ways. Video is captured each time the officer turns on the light bar or siren. It can also be triggered while the officer is out of the car by the wireless microphone. Sometimes, however, things happen so fast that an officer might not have time to turn the recorder on. Luckily, these new recorders are able to "back up" 30 to 60 seconds and show you what happened even before the recorder was on. This feature is a very unique asset and we look forward to seeing how it will work and help the department. The video system is also a valuable tool for officers in court. Officers are able to find specific footage for their case and play it for a jury. So the next time that you see a squad car - smile - you may be on camera.
