FIRE HYDRANT MAINTENANCE

Please keep in mind that trees, shrubs, or other vegetation growing around fire hydrants that are not maintained, can cause potentially dangerous situations if a fire occurs in your neighborhood and the Fire Department cannot locate the hydrant, or have easy access to it.

The City of Burlington Municipal Code requires that hydrants be free of obstructions and debris for the safety of all. Your assistance in achieving this maintenance helps keep your property taxes lower and helps our firefighters respond to emergency situations.

Please make sure that the vegetation on your property is trimmed back or removed in order to allow for a clear line of sight for the fire hydrants. Your efforts may save a life!!

HOUSE NUMBER POSTING REMINDER

Also remember that should a fire or accident occur at your home, the Fire Department, Rescue Squad and Police officers need to be able to see the house numbers easily. By implementing the following guidelines for posting house numbers you may be able to avoid a deadly situation:

Post house numbers:

  • Directly on your house, apartment or garage.

  • By the street or on a post or sign made of fire resistant material.

  • On the mailbox or curb.

  • Anywhere they can be easily seen from the road.

  • That are easy to read, not cursive style.

  • That are at least 4" high.

For any further information or guidance contact our fire department at 763-7842.

ITEMS SUITABLE FOR SEWERAGE SYSTEM

With growing concern and awareness towards the environment, it is important to consider the kinds of waste products that are typically disposed of into the municipal sewer system. This is because some are amenable to biological reduction at the municipal wastewater treatment plant but many are not. Examples of waste products that can safely be poured down a drain followed by plenty of flush water are:

  • Aluminum cleaners

  • Ammonia based cleaners

  • Drain cleaners

  • Toilet, tub and tile cleaners

  • Disinfectants

  • Expired medicine

  • Hair relaxers

  • Rust remover

  • Water based glue

  • Photographic chemicals

There are numerous other kitchen, garage, workshop, gardening and miscellaneous products that we use on a regular basis but are NOT suitable for sewer system disposal. If you have a product to dispose of, and are not sure if you can pour it down your drain, please feel free to contact your municipal wastewater treatment facility at 539-3646.

Please remember that once our wastewater treatment plant has processed the water to the required levels it is then sent back into the Fox River. Contaminants that we cannot biologically reduce are also then placed into the river affecting wildlife and users of the waterway.

SEPTEMBER LIBRARY UPDATE

Join the Adult Book Discussion on Monday, September 27, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss Crow Lake by Mary Lawson. Crow Lake is a gorgeous, slow-burning story set in the wild terrain of northern Ontario, where heartbreak and hardship are mirrored in the landscape. For the farming Pye family, life is a Greek tragedy where the sins of the fathers are visited on the sons. Join us for a discussion of family relationships and how nature's setting plays a role. No sign-up required. Books available at Burlington Public Library or through WAVE at www.burlingtonlibrary.com.

Preschool story time sign up begins September 13, with the story times beginning at the end of September. Please visit our website for more information.
