CITY ENCOURAGES RV AND TRAVEL TRAILER USERS TO DISPOSE OF WASTE

Summer is upon us, and RV travelers are hitting the road! Travelers coming to, and leaving from, the Burlington area are encouraged to visit the City of Burlington Wastewater Treatment Plant to dispose of "gray" water at our facility.

It has come to our attention that many rest areas along our state highways are no longer allowing the dumping of waste from RV's and travel trailers at their dumpsites.

Our facility is located at 6551 S. Pine Street (Highway 83), approximately 1 mile south of the Nestle Chocolate Plant. Don't let the road construction scare you off! You can get to our plant, once you maneuver the barricades.

Plant hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. And the best news - there is no fee for you to empty your waste tank.

Please feel free to contact our office at 262-539-3646 with any questions you may have.

"WEATHERING THE STORM"

The City's wastewater treatment plant has been treating record amounts of sewage with May's 12.5" of rainfall. While the City of Milwaukee bypassed billions of gallons of untreated sewage into Lake Michigan, the City's plant DID NOT bypass one (1) gallon. We maintained our high standards of treatment throughout the periods of high flows. In 2005 the City will begin a facilities study of our treatment plant operation and future needs assessment.

SUMMER FUN AT THE LIBRARY

Adult Book Discussion:

Join us Monday, July 26th at 7:00 pm for the Adult Book Club Discussion of LIFE OF PI by Yann Martel. When the cargo ship Tsimtsum sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the sole lifeboat that is deployed contains wool blankets, emergency rations, and signal flares--as well as a young Indian boy and a Bengal tiger. Adrift at sea for over seven months, the boy called Pi draws from the practical knowledge he gleaned from his zookeeper father to learn how to survive with the tiger, whose name is Richard Parker. But it is his religious practices--Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic--that give him the keen insight he develops regarding his trial at sea. This book is not only a riveting story of a shipwreck survivor; it is also a profound reflection on religious faith and even the nature of storytelling itself. Winner of the 2002 Man Booker Prize, LIFE OF PI is a story so enchanting, elegant and thought provoking that you will choose to believe it is true. Copies are available at the Burlington Public Library, no registration is necessary.

Summer Reading Program:

Why should kids have all the fun? Adults also can sign up for the Discover New Trails Summer Reading Program at Burlington Public Library. The adult program runs from June 28 – August 13. Register at the Reference Desk any time between June 28 and August 13 then read or listen to books on tape or CD. Enter the prize drawing for each book you read. There will be 6 weekly prizes, beginning July 6, and a Grand Prize drawing on August 16. Weekly prizewinners will be eligible for the Grand Prize.

Readers are invited to write brief reviews of their books to be compiled in a binder to share with other readers.

SEATBELTS
Everybody's Wearing Them!

Belting up is now second nature to most people when they get in vehicle. For adults this is very easy, as simple as remembering to put the belt on. What about child safety belt laws? This can become confusing and prompts many curious calls to the police department by concerned citizens wanting to know if they are following the law.

State Statute Motor Vehicle Laws

347.48 (4): This child passenger law authorizes primary enforcement (in other words, no other violation need exist for the police to make a vehicle stop).

  1. No one may transport a child under the age of four that is not properly restrained in a child safety seat, nor under the age of eight that is not in a car seat or safety belt.

  2. No child under the age of eight may be transported in the cargo area of a vehicle or the back of a pickup truck that is not equipped with safety belts or a child car seat.

347.48(2m): 8-16 years is a secondary law (an officer must have another violation in order to stop the vehicle). Driver is responsible and receives citation.

347.48(2m): 16 and over is also a secondary law and each violator receives the citation.

Parents or caregivers can become confused with how to install the safety seat and inadvertently install seats incorrectly. For years now the City of Burlington Police Department has been directing parents or caregivers to contact Miller Motors on Milwaukee Avenue for their highly trained personnel to give instruction on child safety seat installation and inspection. You may contact Sarah Klunk at Miller Motors (262) 763-2466 for assistance in installing a child safety seat or any other questions.
