The Economic Development Committee was established in 2000 to provide assistance to the City's economic development program that is staffed by the City Administrator and the Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC). The assistance consists of providing a business perspective on programs and projects that the City develops and implements in order to foster the creation and retention of jobs and the creation of new tax base in the city. The committee seeks to employ a "business-to-business" approach where the opinions of existing businesspersons in the community will be beneficial to the overall economic development effort.

The Economic Development Committee is made up of people who are concerned about the economic development of the City, including the Mayor, City Administrator, a member of the Common Council, and the President of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. Members are selected by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. Members of the team may be either residents or nonresidents of the City.

The Economic Development Committee Has The Following Duties:

  • Provide input on an annual basis to the City and the Racine County Economic Development Committee (RCEDC) regarding the nature of the City's economic development program, that is, the distribution of activities among business attraction, retention, small business development, business finance and community facility and services activities as reflected in the City's contract for economic development services with the RCEDC.

  • Provide ongoing assistance to the City and the RCEDC on the progress in implementing the City's annual economic development program.

  • Provide a review of applications for the purchase of industrial park land in the City and a recommendation to the Common Council regarding the sale of the land parcels.

  • Provide ongoing assistance to the private real estate firm that is chosen to market the City's business park.

  • Provide an ambassador program provides input to businesses considering relocating to the City of Burlington. The purpose of the effort is to provide information on the business environment in the community from a business perspective. The RCEDC would retain the responsibility for working with the business on a day-to-day basis in providing technical information relative to the relocation effort.

  • Provide ongoing input and technical assistance to the Mayor and the Common Council regarding City economic development issues.
