Burlington Public Library Meeting Room
The Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees met
on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in the Burlington Public
Library meeting room. Present were Pat Hoffman, Kay
Pockat, Ken Jaeger, Yvonne Braunschweig, Steve Rauch,
Scott Johnson, Dianne Boyle, and Penny Torhorst. Excused
was Pat Hurley. Also present were Gayle Falk and Linda
Berndt.
Torhorst called the meeting to order at 4:00.
Minutes of the June 26, 2007 meeting were approved.
Braunschweig moved, and Johnson seconded. Motion passed.
The July General Fund Bills, Prepaids, Reimbursements
and June General Fund Deposits were approved.
Braunschweig moved and Jaeger seconded. Motion passed.
The July Trust Fund Bills and the June Trust Fund
Deposits were approved. Braunschweig moved and Johnson
seconded. Motion passed.
There were no committee reports at this time.
Old Business:
Strategic Planning: Hoffman reported she met with
Matt Nie (a film teacher at the Burlington High School),
Falk and Carole Rybarczyk . The four of them discussed
the purpose or message of the film, as well as the
demographics of the audience. Board members discussed
possible messages and formats for the film. Hoffman
reported that a film like this could cost up to
$5,000.00, and suggested using Trust funds to produce
it. Hoffman suggested using the film to help celebrate
the library’s hundredth birthday in 2008.
The Board agreed and started to list different groups
that would be interested in seeing it. The Board wants
the film to promote the library without asking for
money. It should raise awareness of the library and the
services it offers. It should show the long tradition of
library service in Burlington, as well as the dramatic
ways service has changed. The background music could be
composed by local artists. The staff would have to do
extra work getting permission and releases from patrons
that would be in the film. They would need to collect
stories and contact families that we would feature.
Jaeger moved that we get all avenues started with the
goal in mind of not spending any more than $5,000.00 of
Friends money. Hoffman seconded. Motion passed.
Booksale update: Berndt reported again that the
booksale will start on Thursday at noon instead of 5:00
p.m. and run until 8:00 p.m. It will be in the tent and
also in the basement with a $2.00 charge. This would,
hopefully, help the problem of the overcrowding that we
have in the evening. There is a signup sheet for working
at the sale if anyone is interested.
CD Renewal: Falk had some difficulty in opening the
new Certificate of Deposit, and so brought the issue
back to the Board. Berndt provided the Board with the
new interest rates available at the time of the meeting.
Jaeger moved that Falk should invest at First Banking
Center at 5.20% for a 1 year term. Braunschweig
seconded. Motion passed.
New Business:
County Funding: Falk distributed copies of last
year’s Resolution asking for 100% funding library
service to Racine County residents. The County
Executive’s office reports that it is too early in the
budget process to know what the Executive will do about
library funding. Falk will present the Resolution at the
Council meeting tonight. Hoffman moved that the Library
Board supports this Resolution to be presented to the
City Council and then presented to the County Board.
Braunschweig seconded. Motion passed.
Rauch mentioned that also on the agenda for the
Council meeting tonight is the presentation of the new
subdivision on Hwy 83. There should be much discussion
on this subject.
Director’s Report:
Falk distributed invitations to Board members to the
October Trustee’s Dinner. This is sponsored by
Lakeshores Library System. Anyone interested should
contact Falk.
Boyle asked about the Walmart Grant. Falk explained
that Walmart has donated at least $2,500.00 in the past.
The PD has said that they could teach a CPR class to
our staff members. It would be a 6 hour class and they
could accommodate 6 students.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due out on
Saturday, July 21st at 12:01 p.m. We will
have copies processed and ready for checkout when the
library opens on Saturday morning. We have 28 Burlington
library patrons on hold waiting for their copy to come
in.
BPL in the News:
There were notices in the paper regarding our
upcoming programs.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:58 p.m. Jaeger moved and
Braunschweig seconded. Motion passed.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, August 28th
at 4:00 PM at the Burlington Public Library.
Respectfully submitted,
Yvonne Braunschweig
