Minutes - April 10, 2002
At the meeting this Thursday afternoon Mayor Lois
called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. starting with a
roll call: Mayor Lois, David Torgler, Ken Jaeger, Bill
Phenicie, Matt Russell and Robin Vos. Excused: Frank
Cannella, Larry Dawley, Pat Hoffmann, Paul Mueller and
Karen Schinke. Also present were Matt Wagner and Jenny
Trick of Racine County Economic Development Corporation.
Approval of Minutes. Motion by Ken Jaeger,
seconded by Robin Vos the minutes of the March 21, 2002
EDC meeting were approved.
Recommendation to Amend Membership of the EDC.
Mayor Lois briefly reviewed the Ordinance No. 1645 (49)
wherein the EDC was established and membership was
outlined. Upon a request by the Burlington Area Chamber
of Commerce, Mayor Lois requested consideration to amend
the EDC Membership to include the Chamber President as
an additional member. The position of the Chamber
President rotates annually, and the term of the EDC
member (specific to the Chamber President) would
coincide with the Chamber President rotation schedule.
Robin Vos moved to recommend to the City Council to
modify the EDC membership to include the Chamber
President as an additional member, seconded by Bill
Phenicie, the motion passed unanimously.
Old Business.
Center for Advanced Technology & Innovation (CATI)
West Update. Matt Wagner of the Racine County
Economic Development Corporation provided a brief
overview of the status of the location and funding
request. Mr. Wagner indicated that he had met with
representatives from the school district and reviewed
one of the buildings near/adjacent to the former high
school and found that many areas within the building
were under utilized and could easily be set up to serve
as CATI West. He summarized his discussions regarding
rent expense and asked that he have the ability to
negotiate further with the school district and return to
the EDC with more information at a later date.
New Business.
A Presentation by Matt Wagner of the RCEDC regarding
Angel Investment
Mr. Wagner provided an update to the EDC members
regarding the preparation for an Angel Investment
conference for the Burlington area. An updated list of
potential contacts and investors was distributed for the
group’s review. Further discussion occurred with the
members relating to the potential dates for the
conference, location, invitations, etc. Members of the
EDC requested that the RCEDC staff determine the
potential dates to host the forum within the Burlington
Wellness Center, prepare invitations, telephone contact
list (for EDC members to follow up by telephone), and a
script to offer a brief explanation of intent.
