City of Burlington Economic Development Committee
City Hall – Upper Conference Room
Minutes - May 16, 2001
At the meeting this Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Lois
called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. starting with a
roll call: Robin Vos, Pat Hoffman, Bill Phenicie, Matt
Russell, David Torgler, Frank Cannella and Karen Schinke
Absent: Larry Dawley, Ken Jaeger and Paul Mueller.
Also present at the meeting were Gordon Kacala, Jenny
Trick and Joanne Allen.
Approval of Minutes. Motion by Frank Cannella,
seconded by Bill Phenicie the minutes of the April 25,
2001 EDC meeting were approved.
Old Business.
None.
New Business.
Gordon Kacala provided a copy of the Business Survey
to the committee members for their review. He indicated
that approximately 420 manufacturing companies
throughout Racine County, with employees greater than
10, received the past year’s survey, with a 25-30%
response rate.
This year, an added emphasis will be upon
Burlington’s needs. The survey will be handled in
partnership with the ED Committee, the Chamber of
Commerce and RCEDC to retrieve the survey and likely
gain a facility tour. Given this focused effort, it is
hopeful that the response rate will be greater and allow
for a good exchange of information from the visited
companies.
After review of the list of manufacturing and
non-manufacturing companies, the committee believed it
was important to visit both sectors. Joanne Allen was
then directed to provide an assignment listing to each
EDC member for their follow up and potential site visit.
Other Matters.
Mayor Lois offered a copy of the Gateway Technical
College (GTC) folder for the EDC review. The Burlington
GTC facility is a Certification Center for Western
Racine County. The Mayor offered that the Burlington
facility may be expanding to accommodate additional
training opportunities.
Adjourn.
On a motion by Frank Cannella, seconded by Matthew
Russell, the meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
